Motivational Speaker Carole Spiers explains
the better way to start the day
The habit of the business breakfast has spread so fast and so far that I sometimes wonder if it isn't merely a current fad - deliberately reversing the old idea that early mornings were only for street-cleaners, while senior management would advertise their rank through casual lateness. And also, of course, reversing the habit of lunching your client in grand style, before closing that deal after a lot of lengthy sales talk over a cup of coffee.
But partly fad or not, the business breakfast has totally changed the rhythm of the working day. It brings colleagues together when they are sharp and receptive, able to concentrate totally on the agenda, instead of being half-distracted by other issues still echoing around their mind from the office. This tends to generate a more satisfactory style of business dialogue - a disciplined sequence of relevant questions and answers that really gets things moving. And the fixed end-time for the meeting further encourages keen, brisk discussion without any waffle.
No, you can't do without a proper breakfast
The other big advantage is that it encourages you to enjoy a proper breakfast that so many are tempted to skimp. If the meeting is at your own office, then you've beaten the rush-hour, you're well-nourished, and your mind is already in business mode.
If it's in a hotel, you benefit from that breakfast buffet, where you can select the brain-foods you may not always get. Nuts on your cereal (Vitamin E to counter memory-loss) and health-giving blueberries bursting with nutrients. And nothing like oatmeal for overcoming the mid-morning blood-sugar dip, I'm told.
Business breakfasts - Summary
- The healthy breakfast-meeting has taken over from the unhealthy business lunch
- You benefit from fresh, alert minds and a brisk pace of discussion
- A proper breakfast is known to fortify you properly throughout the working day
